Why forms deserve extra attention

Your contact or quote form is often the last step before a visitor becomes a lead. If someone using a keyboard, a screen reader or a phone with large text cannot complete it, that enquiry is simply lost.

The good news is that accessible forms are usually simpler forms. The fixes that help disabled visitors tend to make the experience smoother for everyone.

Quick tip

Click on each field label. If the cursor does not jump into the matching field, the label is not connected properly.

Label every field clearly

Use visible labels above each field rather than relying on placeholder text that disappears as soon as someone starts typing. Mark required fields in words, not just with colour or an asterisk on its own.

Keep the number of fields to what you genuinely need. Every extra question adds effort and gives people another reason to leave.

Make errors easy to fix

When something goes wrong, explain exactly what and where. A message like “Please enter a valid email address” next to the field is far more helpful than a red border with no explanation.

Keep what the visitor already typed so they do not have to start again, and make sure error messages are announced to screen readers.

Your practical checklist

  • Give every field a visible, connected label.
  • Complete your form using only the Tab and Enter keys.
  • Write error messages that say how to fix the problem.
  • Remove fields you do not truly need.
  • Test the form on a phone with larger text turned on.
